Information about the summer purification ceremony at Yukura Shrine

What is Oharai?

The Great Purification is based on the traditional Japanese way of thinking, and its purpose is to purify one's own mind and body of impurities, as well as various sins and mistakes that may cause disaster, so that one can always go about one's daily life with a pure mind.


Chinowa Shinto Ritual

・By passing through the straw circle during the summer purification ritual, you will be cleansed of disease and sin and will be purified in both body and mind.You can then give thanks for the safety of the past six months and pray for further peace in the remaining six months, and visit with renewed determination.


The origin of the Chinowa ritual

・It is said to have originated from the story of Somin Shorai, which was written in the "Chikugo Fudoki Itobun" in the Shaku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan), in the 6th year of the Wadō era (713). When Somin Shorai followed the teachings of Susanoo and hung a straw circle around his waist, his descendants prospered without any misfortune, and so today, passing through a straw circle is performed as part of the summer purification ritual.
